Innovative End-to-End Production Process

Hydrodynamic Design

Using proprietary hydrodynamic design, Aurora has developed pond systems which nurture algae to grow at phenomenal rates.  The design leverages natural conditions and incorporates a carbon dioxide-rich environment with optimal fluid dynamic characteristics. We have developed techniques to minimize energy demands throughout the growth and production phases of the process. Once extracted, the algae oil is ready for further processing into the end products; Omega-3 fatty acids, valuable proteins, and biodiesel, with the remaining algae mass becoming protein-rich animal feed.

Real-time Scientific Analysis

Like traditional farming, the health and productivity of our crop is dependent on swift analysis and action to address changing environmental and crop conditions.  To this end we have developed a proprietary pond information management system (PIMS). Data is collected, analyzed and reported in real time to allow for immediate adjustments to pond environment. The system collects data such as PH balance, temperature, density, turbidity, nutrient and water levels, and many other variables that can impact growth and health of crop. Whether onsite or remote, our scientists can monitor these automated ponds and take necessary steps to ensure continuous high yields.

Knowledge is Power

Our PIMS tool not only supports the daily growth of our algae but informs decisions we make about future crops. Our scientists have leveraged the information collected from our pilot ponds to compare our unique pale green cultivars against wild type algae. From this knowledge we are able to determine light thresholds, effects of water temperature and weather changes, and many other impacts. With such analysis we can simultaneously determine optimal climate conditions, nutrient, energy, and light conditions for our current strains and future strains.

“By taking a photosynthetic approach to algae cultivation in open pond farms, we’re able to achieve production costs that rival the lowest cost producers focused solely on the fuels market. At the same time, we’re focused on the high-value market segments served today by competitors with a higher-cost fermentation process. This puts Aurora Algae in the unique position of generating attractive returns from the first commercial facility, without the need for government subsidies.”
